Hagar Qim Temples. Another journey through history

Hagar Qim Temples are located in the South of Malta close to Zurrieq. This is one of those places that are worth visiting,. It is a stone structure from thousands of years ago and is showing a different way of living people had. The temples are having a wonderful view over Filfla island on the open sea. The location is amazing. Very calming, and you are all surrounded by nature.

History of Hagar Qim Temples

These temples were built in the period between 3600-3200 BC. There is Hagar Qim at the top of the hill, and 500 meters down is Mnajdra Temples. You can see some of the largest megaliths used in the building of these structures, such as a 5.2m high stone. There is also a huge megalith estimated to weigh close to 20 tonnes.

For many centuries the temples were covered with dust, and only the large standing stones were visible.  Most of the standing stones have marks from the farmer's plow. This place was used for farming. It was discovered in early 1839 and with many fat ladies sculptures. Those are very popular in Malta. It is also assumed that it was used for sacrificing animals.

About the Temples

The megalithic temples of Hagar Qim (meaning "Standing Stone") are the most preserved prehistoric sights. They were probably with a roof above, but it must have collapsed over the years. . The chambers are all connected without any order which makes it different than the rest of the temples on the island.

Hagar Qim Temples are full of significant solar alignments. During the winter solstice, at sunrise, a beam of sunlight illuminates the altar and many chambers are exposed to the light. Because of their magnificence, they are part of Heritage Malta.

How to visit Hagar Qim Temples?
