You might not know, but Malta is a popular filming location for many filmmakers. It is very popular for ancient, roman and medieval times scenes, and proven are many movies that set their scenes all around the island. Today many of those places and locations are very attractive to tourists. The most popular ones are the scenes from Game of Thrones from the first Season and Popeye village, build for the purpose of filing Popeye in 1980. Well here is a list of some of the movies filmed in Malta to fill your time at home and think of your next vacation.
Gladiator
This is an amazing history movie starring Russel Crowe. The story goes back to Roman times when the fights of the Gladiators were popular. A lot of action and fight, emotions, a great story, and exciting scenes. Some of the scenes were filmed on Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara and the old port of Vittoriosa.
Troy
Well, yes! Scenes from Troy have been filmed in Malta. I believe this is everybody's kind of movie. Troy has great scenes with amazing landscapes and some of those were filmed on Blue Lagoon in Comino, Mellieha bay, and the popular Fort Ricasoli.
The Count of Monte Cristo
This is a thrilling adventure based on the book by Alexander Dima. The story takes place in France and Italy during the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte. Many of the scenes were actually filmed in Malta, Gozo, and Comino, and they can be clearly recognized in the movie. This is a great inspiring movie to watch, and I highly recommend it.
World War Z
This is one of that zombie apocalyptic movies that is interesting to watch. Starring Brad Pitt, Malta is becoming very familiar to this actor. I didn't know the movie had some scenes recorded here in Malta, but I couldn't notice the scenery and the landscapes of the country. What is the movie is presented to be Jerusalem, which is actually Valletta.
Assasin's Creed
Assasin's Creed is a movie based on a game and has an interesting adventurous trip back in time story. The movie has a medieval theme and Valletta seemed to be perfect for that purpose. I remember when they were making scene preparations on the streets in Valletta. All of that took place on Merchant Street in Valletta, but there are other places where scenes were filmed, like Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara.
Kon Tiki
I love this movie. It is based on a true story about the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who went on an expedition from South America all over the Pacific ocean to prove that the people in Polynesia descend from South America. Most of the scenes were filmed on water and in the biggest filming pool in Europe, which is located in Malta. I also recognized Valletta's grand harbor in the scene when the crew was departing to go on the expedition. The story of the movie is amazing.
Well, these are some of the movies filmed in Malta, and all of the themes are good to be seen. Enjoy your time at home, and dive into some of these amazing stories.
